Looking Forward, Looking Back

Doc Watson died today.

For most of the Justin Bieber-ite crowd, that probably means precisely bupkiss.  But for those of us with a little bit of Mountain in our souls, it’s a big loss.

I got to meet Watson a few years back, while I was travelling down the Crooked Road in Virginia for a project.  He was in his mid-eighties, but was still bright-eyed and full of smiles.

Rest in peace, Doc.

I’m still assembling my summer wishlist.

(in other words, it’s not too late to leave a comment and weigh in on things you think are Not To Be Missed during the summertime.)

And if I had anything remotely resembling space in this yard, I’d TOTALLY be building one of these:

earthen oven, by the folks at Root Simple

That’s right.  It’s a clay oven.  A BIG clay oven.  For, like, cooking without an electric one indoors.

Can I just mention how swoony it makes me?  (Very.)  I have no idea how to cook with one, mind you.  But after a few years of one of those electric glass-topped stoves in the house, I think it’d be kind of…well… awesome.

The folks over at Root Simple have put together a step-by-step tutorial on how they made theirs (and a short video time-lapse of their own construction in progress).  Get this…the insulation layer?  Totally beer bottles.  I’m wondering how easy it would be to invite all my neighbors over for an Insulation Creation party.  (Here, folks…drink THIS…you’d be totally helping me build an oven.)  As if I’m not already the neighborhood crazylady.

I’m kind of okay with that.

Doc’s concerts had this same vibe – let’s just sit here and pick for a spell. Just a fantastic experience.
