Paradiso Age 88, of Watkins Glen, died peacefully in the home of his daughter Kathryn and his future son-in-law Bill on March 24, Surrounding them were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Paul had always found great pleasure in the community, but most of all his family. They courted, then married and began the journey of building a family. Together they raised two daughters, who were given all they needed and most of what they wanted. Their home was so kind and loving that it became the place where family and friends often gathered. The door was always open and the coffee always on. In Watkins Glen, Paul had a very successful banking career.
While working he also found time to participate in the Rotary Club, serving as President. He helped with fundraisers like the spaghetti dinners and Camp Star for underprivileged children. He was also a Lions Club member. His pride was belonging to the "Watkins Glen Tomorrow" project, in which his "baby" was helping to develop the waterfront of Seneca Lake and designing the now world-famous pier at the south end.
In his retirement, he helped his grandchildren during their formative years; entertaining and caring for them with a non-judging ear. They were all the apples of his eye and will be forever grateful of his many gifts, but mostly time and encouragement. My father Paul, who I refer to as Dad and Pops, has always been by my side. From childhood where he was my playmate, to young adulthood when he helped me raise my children.
In his senior years, I had the honor of having him in our home, returning the favor at the end of his glorious life. Which, by the way, could not have been possible without the loving and caring heart of Colista. He is my hero. His absence will always be felt. Our family would also like to express our deepest thanks to Dr. Ben Saks and his nurse Reagan. Rosanne had been a resident at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls for two years; her husband, John Gormley, gratefully having been allowed to assist in her daily care and support.
Abundant thanks to the entire staff for their compassionate care and to her co-residents for their friendship. Rosanne was the first of four children of Wanda Amanda Kempton, a music teacher and an accomplished pianist, and Paul Harold Armstrong, an industrial chemical engineer. She was born in in the home of her maternal grandparents in Utica, Ohio.
She grew up in Cleveland along with her siblings, Enaid, Edwin and Linda. The family spent many happy sojourns at a family cottage on Hamilton Lake in Northern Indiana. She was exposed to the fine arts as a young girl with frequent visits to the Cleveland Museum of Art and attendance at concerts of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra.
She attended John Marshall High School, where she was a member of several school organizations and the illustrator for the school paper. She graduated in and with two scholarships she attended the Cleveland Institute of Art which set her on a life-time of creative accomplishments.
She once said that her deepest desire was to become an artist. She continued throughout her life to produce sketches, paintings, portraits, and water colors that brought delight to many.
